Methane Working Group

In June 2024, the GEIA SSC approved the plans for a new Methane WG, co-chaired by:

-John Worden - Jet Propulsion Laboratory / California Institute of Technology
-Greet Janssens-Maenhout - European Commission, Joint Research Centre (JRC), Ispra, Italy

-Thomas Diehl - European Commission, Joint Research Centre (JRC), Ispra, Italy

-Bram Maasakkers - SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research
-Taku Umezewa - National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan
-Monica Crippa - European Commission, Joint Research Centre (JRC), Ispra, Italy

-Brian McDonald - NOAA Chemical Sciences Laboratory, Boulder, CO, USA

The Methane Working Group’s goal is to support efforts in assessing the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) progress. In particular, the group aims to identify the factors that limit our ability to robustly evaluate GMP progress using atmospheric and activity based emission estimates, and explore potential solutions to these challenges.
